Rock-and-Surf Fishing in Zinkwazi
The beach is the everyday option. Main Beach and the rocky points either side of it give you a mix of sand and structure, and the regulars work the gullies at low tide and the backline as the tide pushes in. Kingfish, garrick, kob and shad in season are the names you will hear most at the club bar.
Dawn and dusk are the productive hours, and the turn of the tide matters more than the time on the clock. Bring your own tackle; the nearest well-stocked tackle shops are in the larger towns down the N2, so arrive with what you need rather than planning to buy it here.
Zinkwazi Lagoon Fishing
Lagoon fishing is the slow kind, done from the bank with a flask of coffee. That is rather the point.
The lagoon runs roughly seven kilometres inland and gives you sheltered water when the sea is unfishable. Light tackle and bait work well from the bank; the mouth and the deeper channels are where the regulars head, and estuary species such as grunter and kob are the usual targets. Children can fish the lagoon safely from the bank in a way the surf never allows.

The Zinkwazi Ski-Boat Club sits at the top of the beach and is the centre of North Coast fishing life in the village. It manages sea and lagoon launches, it is the place to ask about fishing charters, and its bar with a view of the ocean is where the day’s stories get told. If you are bringing a boat, make contact before you travel; launch procedures and any fees can change from season to season.
