Load-Shedding-Ready Holiday Homes in Zinkwazi Beach: Every Home with an Inverter, Solar Backup or Generator

Backup power is listed under Load shedding in the Features and Facilities tab of every property page. What follows is that information gathered into one place and, more usefully, translated into what it means on a Tuesday night in December with the power off.

Load Shedding in September 2026: Where Things Stand

Eskom has not implemented a single stage of load shedding since mid-May 2025, more than fifteen months at the time of writing, and its published outlooks have projected none since. The Eskom power system status page is the place to check before you travel, because that is the one thing about this subject that can change overnight.

Two honest caveats. First, a power cut at the coast is usually not load shedding at all. Summer storms, lightning, cable faults and trips on the local network take the village down for a few hours at a time, occasionally longer, and no national schedule warns you about those. Second, Eskom keeps the option of reinstating load shedding if breakdowns climb, which is why we do not use the phrase load shedding free accommodation loosely. We would rather tell you exactly what each home has and let you decide.

Inverter, Solar, Generator or Gas: What Each One Actually Covers

Inverter, selected coverage. This is what twenty of our homes list, and the words selected coverage matter. A battery-backed inverter is wired to particular circuits, typically the lights, a few plug points, the router and the television. High-draw appliances such as the geyser, oven, kettle, air conditioner and pool pump are almost never on it. How long it lasts depends on the size of the battery and how hard you lean on it: hours, not days. If you are looking for accommodation with an inverter, ask on arrival which plugs are covered and treat the rest as off.

Solar backup, selected use. Five homes list this. Panels charge a battery during the day, so the backup recovers with the sun rather than waiting for Eskom, but the same selected-circuit logic applies. Dolphin View, for example, pairs solar geysers with an inverter for lights and plugs: hot water and lighting, not the whole house. Cambelle @ The Beach is the only home that lists all three of inverter, solar backup and generator.

Petrol generator. Four homes have one, and each provides a single tank of petrol. A generator will carry heavier loads than an inverter, which is its point, but it is noisy, it needs someone to start it, and once the tank is empty the fuel is yours to buy. Ask where it is kept, how it is started and whether the owner limits the hours it may run.

Gas. This is the quiet hero of the list. Fifty-three of our 58 homes list either a permanent gas hob, in which case dinner happens regardless, or a gas bottle with a cooker top kept for outages, which will boil a pot but not roast a leg of lamb. Sleeps is the maximum on the listing, position is as stated on the property page, and the backup column repeats the property page wording so nothing is oversold. Every name links to the home.

If you want accommodation with an inverter for a large family, start at the top of the table. The White House sleeps 24 on the lagoon with both an inverter and a generator, and Happy Hideaway, Cambelle @ The Beach and The Green Gate all take fifteen or sixteen. Homes Without an Inverter: Gas Cooking and Rechargeable Lights

The other 33 homes list gas cooking, rechargeable lights or both, and for a beach holiday that is often plenty. You are outdoors most of the day, the braai does not care about Eskom, and a torch by each bed covers the rest. The real discomfort of an outage in Zinkwazi is a still January night with the ceiling fans off, and an inverter will not run the air conditioning anyway.

Size is not a guide to backup. Some of our largest homes rely on gas and rechargeable lights, so check the list rather than assume:

• Lalla Rookh — sleeps 12, lagoon front; rechargeable lights.
• Pelicans — sleeps 12, across the road from the beach; rechargeable lights.

Nkwazi Ridge Estate is worth a specific note because people assume a security estate means a generator. Of the five estate homes we let, only 365 Nkwazi Ridge Estate lists an inverter; The Ridge House, Seaclusion and The Royal Familia Beach House list rechargeable lights, and A Peaceful Place adds a gas hob.

Three Questions to Ask Before You Book

Practical Notes for a Power Cut at the Coast

Before you travel, check the Eskom status page and search for Zinkwazi Beach in the Eskom app or on EskomSePush so you know the schedule if load shedding does return. On arrival, ask the housekeeper or your agent which plugs are on the inverter, where the gas bottle and cooker top live, and where the torches are charged. Every one of our 58 homes provides Wi-Fi, but only the inverter and generator homes keep the router up in an outage, so if you are working remotely, that is the line in the table to read first.

During an outage, keep the fridge and freezer doors shut, unplug the television and router if there is lightning about, and run the generator outdoors in the open air only.
