Living on the Beachfront: The Practical Side
Staying on the sand is wonderful and slightly relentless.
Salt air is hard on electronics and hinges, so windows facing the sea are often kept shut in strong onshore wind. Sand travels: an outdoor tap or shower at the path entrance saves the interior of the house. Blue bottles wash up on certain wind directions, usually a northeasterly, and children should be warned rather than surprised.
A useful local trick — talcum powder removes dry sand from skin far better than water, which is worth knowing before the walk back up to the car.
